Acne

Acne is the most common skin disease. It begins mostly with the adolescence and normally heals up with the end of the adolescence. But sometimes the disease lasts even longer. How does acne emerge?

Acne emerges amongst other things by a hormonal changeover whilst adolescence, which leads to an increased activity of the oil glands, externally visible by a greasy skin. This leads to an intensified development of sebaceous clots (comedones) in the skin. Inflammatory and sometimes painful nodules and purulent pustules appear.

Important factors for the development of acne:

  • Excessive sebum production
  • ncreased number of keratinocytes
  • Augmentation of bacteria (they are not infectious!!)
  • Inflammatory reaction

What has an influence on the development of acne?

The highest influence on the distinction of the acne have the genetic endowments. If your parents suffered form acne, the possibility for you to be concerned with the disease is higher than normal.
An important trigger of the acne at adolescents are the hormones, the body produces at the beginning of the puberty. Mainly male sex hormones (androgens), which are also produced in lower concentration by females, lead to an increased sebum production.
The amount of the produced sebum depends less on the quantity of androgens, than on the sensitivity of the sebum glands.

Among the genetic endowments and the increased amount of hormones in the puberty, also external factors have an influence on the acne. So ingredients of body care products can stimulate the acne. Can acne just emerge while puberty?

Acne occurs preferably with the beginning of the puberty and decays between the 20-25 year of one‘s life. But it can also appear beyond this period.
Thus some babies suffer from acne, which fades away and reappears with the puberty. Other patients still suffer from acne after their 25 year of life, whereat the following rule counts:

The bigger the body surface which is concerned by acne, the longer it lasts.

Where can acne emerge and which manifestations exist?

Acne does not only emerge in the face, but also at the chest and the back. There are a lot of different manifestations of acne. Three different forms are distinguished:

  • the light acne, where mainly comedones are found
  • the moderate acne, where in addition many inflammatory blains and purulent blains are visible
  • the severe acne, where furthermore nodules and abscesses occur.

Every form of acne needs a different type of treatment which often lasts for a long period.

Why should I have my acne treated by a dermatologist?

The optimal therapy of the acne can only be carried out by a dermatologist. Only he can decide what are the appropriate agents for the respective form of acne and which combinations of agents are reasonable. Moreover some of the most important drugs are prescription medicines, so you can only get them with an recipe from a doctor. Of particular importance is the consultation, if the skin is inflamed, otherwise permanent scars can occur later.
