Frequently Asked Questions About Our Spider Vein Removal
How can spider veins be effectively removed?
The most long-established method for treating spider veins is sclerotherapy.
The principle involves injecting a liquid into the dilated vein, which causes an irritation of the vessel wall, subsequently leading to the closure of the vessel.
A more recent method is the removal of dilated capillaries using a long-pulsed Neodymium YAG laser. Both of these low-side-effect and minimally painful methods can be performed on an outpatient basis and repeated as often as necessary.
What are the potential disadvantages of sclerotherapy for spider veins?
During sclerotherapy, the injection of the sclerosing agent may cause a slight burning sensation for a few seconds. Sclerotherapy often leads to the formation of small bruises or a very mild inflammation of the vein, visible as a temporary bluish discoloration of the vessels.
Occasionally, a brownish pigmentation (discoloration) of the skin at the injection site is observed after sclerotherapy, which typically recedes after a few weeks.
What are the potential disadvantages of laser treatment for spider veins?
Immediately following the treatment, the skin may be red and slightly swollen for a few hours. In rare cases, tiny crusts may form after a few days. Initially, a brownish to grayish shadow of the former spider veins may remain visible, but this typically disappears after a few days or weeks.
What should be considered after sclerotherapy or laser treatment?
Immediately after sclerotherapy, you should stay active, such as walking or cycling. Prolonged standing or sitting should be avoided. For 8–10 days, avoid saunas, and for 4 weeks, avoid direct sun exposure.
To optimize the success of the treatment, compression stockings should be worn for 14 days following sclerotherapy. Small adhesive strips or cotton rolls are placed on the injection sites and can be removed the same day.
For the first 14 days after laser treatment, avoid intense heating of the treated skin areas (e.g., saunas, full baths, sun exposure).
